The SC4 Head Baseball Coach for 17 seasons, beginning in 1965 and retiring in 1988. During that period the Skippers posted a 16-season record of 419-134. The career record featured three trips to the N.J.C.C.A. World Series finishing as the runner up in 1976. The SC4 baseball program has produced 42 players who have signed professional baseball contracts and several who had contributed at the major league level.
In 1989 Dick was inducted into the National Junior College Hall of Fame, followed by inductions into the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame. the SC4 Hall of Fame and the Olivet College Hall of Fame.
Groch was named to the coaching staff for the 1979 USA team in Puerto Rico competing in the Pan American Games. In 1993 he was named to the staff of the Canadian National Team for the Pan-American games played in Caracas, Venezuela. The highlight of his extensive exposure to international baseball was when he was assigned coverage in the 1984 Olympic Games.
Dick has had extensive exposure in the international market beginning in 1973 with the SC4 baseball team when it participated in a Goodwill Tournament in Guayaguil, Ecuador. Groch's baseball career has allowed worldwide travel.
He is the author of two books on baseball, “Baseball the Major League Way” – Kendall-Hunt Publishing co. and “Mastering Baseball” – Contemporary Book Inc. Groch also has had several baseball articles published in professional journals.
He was raised in Toledo, Ohio and received his BA degree from Olivet college and MA from Central Michigan University.
