Information Literacy Program Assessment

Library Information Literacy Program 2024-2025

See below for ENG 100/101, ENG 102, HIS 101, and PN 115 library IL assessment reports.

  • The library conducted more information literacy classes in 2024-25 than in the previous academic year.
  • The library does not have a process for identifying how many students are attending a library IL class for the first time. In 2024-25, an ungraded question was added to the HIS 101 assignments: “Have you attended an online or in person SC4 library information literacy session (library orientation) before?” This question will roughly estimate how many duplicate students attend each year and compare their scores to those of new library students for persistence.

Observations

The elements of citations are being assessed as part of the Communications General Education Outcome 2: Employ and document credible sources of information. The library IL assignment has several citation questions.

Students are still performing poorly on the citation questions despite additional instruction being added to the program and the assignment. The scores would improve if I added a slide designed to tell them the selection they chose was incorrect and to guess again. Would this help them retain the information, though?

Update the Boolean and evaluation questions for 2025-2026.

Student Survey - ENG 100/101

Students were prompted to complete an optional anonymous survey after completing the library information literacy assignment. Unfiltered student responses to the survey are shown in the PDF below.

English 102

Seven ENG 102 classes participated in the online IL program with an assignment. The assignment served as bonus points for three of the classes and not all students participated.

As expected, the students performed better on all three IL Gen. Ed. Outcomes and citation questions than ENG 100/101 students.

Students were prompted to complete an optional anonymous survey after completing the library information literacy assignment. Unfiltered student responses to the survey are shown in the PDF below.

History 101

Observations after grading 2024-25 HIS 101 IL library assignments & reading student comments of the program

  • Keep OneSearch - students like finding articles, books, and academic videos in one spot.
  • History Reference Center is a Michigan Electronic Library (MeL) database. Access to the database may be eliminated because of federal cuts to the Institute of Museum and Library Services grants.
  • Despite added material on the elements of an MLA citation, students performed worse on the citation questions than in 2023-24.
  • Students who remembered having a library information literacy session in another class performed no better than students who had not.
