Information Literacy Program Assessment

Library Information Literacy Program 2023-2024

See below for ENG 100/101, ENG 102, HIS 101, and PN 115 library IL assessment reports.

  • The library conducted more information literacy classes in 2023-24 than the previous academic year.
  • The library does not have a process for identifying how many students are attending a library IL class for the first time. In 2024-25, an ungraded question will be added to the assignments: “Have you attended an online or in person SC4 library information literacy session (library orientation) before?” This question will give a rough estimate of how many duplicate students attend each year and compare their scores to new library students for persistence.

Observations Fall 2023

Week 6

Librarian noted in September Assessment Committee meetings that elements of citations are being assessed as part of the Communications General Education Outcome 2: Employ and document credible sources of information. The library IL assignment has several citation questions.

Students are still performing poorly on the citation questions. One English instructor commented students had not received MLA instruction in class yet. Questions to ponder:

Do students attending IL instruction in person perform better on the citation questions than those participating in the online program? If so, the online program needs improvements in this area. Try to compare the responses of students during the same week of the semester.

Observations Winter 2024 - English 100/101

  • Students performed considerably better on the Information Literacy Gen. Ed. Outcomes questions than 2022-23.
  • Despite adding material on citing sources directly into the library assignment, students performed considerably worse on the citation questions this year.
    • Are they doing worse every year because the K-12 schools have reduced/eliminated school librarians? Citing sources correctly is relevant to Communication Gen. Ed. Outcomes.
    • What can be added/changed to improve this area?

To do for next year

  • Add section on how to find a scholarly source from news article/broadcast.

Student Survey - ENG 100/101

Students were prompted to complete an optional anonymous survey after completing the library information literacy assignment. Unfiltered student responses to the survey are shown in the PDF below.

English 102

English 102 faculty have had their students attend a library information literacy class for years but, until recently, they have not completed a library IL assignment. This year, four ENG 102 classes participated in the online IL program with an assignment. Students could submit the assignment for class bonus points.

As expected, the students performed better on all three IL Gen. Ed. Outcomes and the citation questions than the ENG 100/101 students.

History 101

Observations Winter 2024 - History 101 Library Information Literacy Program

Observations after grading Winter 2024 HIS 101 IL library assignments & reading student comments of the program

  • Keep OneSearch - students like how they can find articles, books, and academic videos all in one spot.
  • Need to explain why to use a subject database v OneSearch better - focus on the discipline.
  • Remove primary sources question because students seem to understand first-person accounts can be biased.
  • Change estimated time it takes to complete assignment from 20 minutes to 30 minutes. (Completed 4/29/2024)
  • Too many tabs? Others like the tabs. History 101 Student Survey

Practical Nursing 115

Practical Nursing 115

Students in PN 115 did not do as well as those in ENG 101 and HIS 101 in completing Gen. Ed. IL Outcome 2: Demonstrate how and where to search for reliable information. Student comments regarding the program indicate many of the students are encountering Boolean and other advanced searching skills for the first time. Students are also pleasantly surprised by the amount of library materials available to them as students.
