Information Literacy Program Assessment

Library Information Literacy Program 2022-2023

Observations at the end of Fall 2022

English 101:

  • Students overall scores remained about the same as the scores from 2021-22. Assessment scores for all three Information Literacy General Education Outcomes were also about the same.
  • Students scored significantly better in Fall 2022 than last year on the citation questions (70% correct this fall versus 52% last academic year). The addition of an informational citation slide within the assignment immediately before the citation questions appears to have helped.

Although students' scores improved this semester after the addition of an information slide in the assignment, answering this question correctly is considered so insignificant it is not even calculated into the students' IL Gen. Ed. Outcome scores.

History 101:

  • Students scores significantly improved Summer and Fall 2022 over the 2021-22 academic year. (IL Outcome 1 - 97% current versus 93% last year; IL Outcome 2 - 78% versus 68%; IL Outcome 3 - 855 versus 77%; Citation questions - 65% versus 47%)

How can we improve student learning of IL Gen. Ed. outcomes two and  three? Would additional informational slides within the assignment help? How do we know students are retaining the skills learned in the program?

Observations at the end of Winter 2023 semester

The number of students attending information literacy classes increased significantly from 2021-22 (675 students) to 2022-23 (911 students).  The goal is to encourage non-participating faculty to have their students attend an online or face-to-face library IL class. Studies show there is a positive correlation between students attending an information literacy class and enrollment retention (O’Kelly, et al. “Correlation Between Library Instruction and Student Retention: Methods and Implications”).

In response to 2021-2022 student assignment responses, changes were made before 2022-2023 which included:

  • Lateral Reading video replaced with one produced by Stanford University Civic Online Reasoning Institute titled, “Sort Fact from Fiction Online with Lateral Reading” in both the ENG 101 and HIS 101 IL programs.
  • Added additional material regarding how to read an MLA citation.

The addition of material to evaluating websites should have improved student scores for IL General Education 3. The change slightly improved ENG 101 scores in this area from 76% in 2021-22 correct to 80% correct in 2022-23 and greatly increased HIS 101 scores from 77% in 2021-22 to 86% in 2022-23.

Students' scores for identifying the elements of an MLA citation also improved from 52% in 2021-22 to 66% in 2022-23 for the ENG 101 program. Scores declined in the HIS 101 program from 2021-22 to 2022-23.
