Databases: Permanent Link or Permalink

Permanent links/permalinks are stable, permanent hyperlinks.

Permanent links are located in different areas, depending on which database you're using. This FAQ will go through finding the permalinks in several different databases.

Different databases may use different terms for permalinks. Some of these terms are:

  • Permanent link/URL
  • Permalink
  • Persistent link
  • Bookmark
  • Direct Link
  • Share
  • Stable URL

If you can't find any of these terms or are unsure about which link/URL to use, please ask a librarian!

Locating a permanent link or permalink to an article in EBSCOhost databases (including Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete, History Reference Center, Literary Reference Center, Newspaper Source Plus, Nursing Reference Center Plus, and SocINDEX with Full Text):

ebsco permalink location

permalink in ebsco - academic search complete

Now you may copy and paste the permalink into your Canvas course.

Locating a permanent link or permalink to an article in Gale databases (including Global Issues, Opposing Viewpoints, Gale Virtual Reference Library, and Literature Resource Center):

gale bookmark location

permalink bookmark in gale

This is the link you will want to use, and may now be copied and pasted into your Canvas course.

OneSearch: Permalinks

Locating a permanent link or permalink to an article (or other resource) in OneSearch:

permalink location in onesearch

permalink in onesearch to copy and paste

Using OneSearch Permalinks

Several databases, such as the ProQuest databases, ScienceDirect, and Wiley Online Library, do not provide permalinks.

If you would like to use a resource from a database that does not provide permalinks, link instead to the OneSearch results.

In ProQuest:

proquest

Instead, search for the article in OneSearch and copy and paste this link instead, as shown below.

proquest and onesearch

In ScienceDirect:

An article from ScienceDirect is shown below.

sciencedirect article

The below image shows the same article after searching in OneSearch. Copy and paste this permalink for use.

If you are unable to find the permalink, need help finding a permalink in a database not shown here, or are experiencing other problems, please ask a librarian!
