Native Plant Seed Library

Friends of St. Clair River & SC4 collaborative project

Update - Spring 2025

Native plant seeds in southeast Michigan are best planted in late fall. During the summer downtime, SC4 loaned the seed library to Port Huron Museum for the "Blue Water, Green Spaces" exhibit which runs April 4 through September 28, 2025.

The native plant seed library will be back in the lobby of the SC4 library with fresh seeds this fall!

About the project

The Thumb Coast Seed Library Project was initiated by the Friends of the St. Clair River in 2022. The project will furnish two free, public seed libraries: one at Friends of the St. Clair River Thumb Coast Watershed Center in St. Clair and a second at St. Clair County Community College Library in Port Huron. These seed libraries will provide a low barrier to entry for St. Clair County residents who wish to start native plants of their own from our free supply of native seeds and accompanying educational materials.

The goals for this project are to promote the importance of including native plants in all landscapes and to make Michigan native seeds easily accessible and affordable to those who would otherwise not have access to them.

Where? The Seed Library is located in the College Center building at 323 Erie Street Port Huron. On loan to the Port Huron Museum until end of September 2025 for the "Blue Water, Green Spaces" exhibit.

When? The Seed Library is open during SC4 Library hours

Who? Anyone can "borrow" seeds from the library.

Do I have to pay for seeds? No, the seeds are free thanks to the Friends of the St, Clair River.

Can I donate my seeds?  No, seeds will be provided by the Friends of the St. Clair River.
