Photographs: Archival Care and Management
by
Mary Lynn Ritzenthaler; Diane Vogt-O'Connor
In this very thorough resource about the preservation of digital images, Ritzenthaler and Vogt-O'Connor, along with Zinkham, Carnell, and Peterson, have assembled excellent material on archiving and managing digital images. The authors also very wisely obtained the professional advice and service of some of the best authorities in the field of photographic preservation. The book begins with a neatly, orderly arrangement of the contents, detailing the process of storing and digitizing images. Each chapter provides ample information about such subjects as copyright, legal, and ethical issues, reference, research, cataloging, accession, arrangement, appraisal, and acquisition of photographs. The 13 chapters contain tips, illustrations, chapter summaries, endnotes, and terminology used in the field. There might be too much information for those wanting only to learn to scan and digitize family photos. However, this book is indispensable for practical uses in museums, academic classrooms, and libraries. There is much invaluable information, such as getting money for grants to fund preservation projects, which many institutions will find useful. The book is literally a systematic process about learning how to digitize any collection of photographs, and it sets the standard for this genre of books
