E-books

Finding eBooks

Full text electronic books or ebooks are available through the OneSearch box on the library homepage and some individual library databases.  E-books are excellent resources to use because they are available full text online.

To find ebooks using the OneSearch box on the topic of football AND concussion, we will go to the library homepage at esearch.sc4.edu and type in the search string. (There is also a video demonstrating using OneSearch to find ebooks at the bottom of this webpage.)

Over 200,000 results were found in the library databases and catalog.

Narrow the results down by using the box in the left hand column. I have checked the books/ebooks link in the example below but note that you can also narrow to scholarly articles, etc.

The result list is shown. Ebooks are identified as such. Books that are available in hard copy in the library, or print books, give the call number of the title.

We will click on the title of the first ebook listed: Throwaway Players: Concussion Crisis from Pee Wee Football to the NFL. When off campus, you will be prompted to enter your student ID number and the barcode number on the BACK of your Skippers OneCard.

You can read the title online by clicking on a chapter and scrolling. You can also search for keywords within the entire ebook.  Below is an example of searching for the word Lions (as in Detroit Lions).

Clicking on the specific chapter(s) where the keyword is used will go right to that page.

If you use a quote or information out of the ebook, you will need to cite the material in your Works Cited page. Most of the library databases will generate the citation for you. In this ebook database, you will need to click on the quotataion mark icon.

Sometimes the citation will be in MLA format, othertimes APA format. You can change to the citation style format you need for class. In English classes, you will use MLA format. APA format is used in Nursing, Criminal Justice, and Psychology classes.

Note the link Export Citation in the picture above. This link with export the citation to the RefWorks / Flow software discussed later in the program.

You can also download most ebook titles for 14 days to whatever device you are using to search the databases: smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. Clicking on the link shown below will prompt you with directions on how to proceed with downloading the title. Please contact a reference librarian if you are having trouble downloading material.
