Topic Overview
Education: A broadly inclusive term referring to a process of fostering cognitive, physical, social, emotional, or moral growth and development in individuals or groups. It is goal directed, implies a values system, and may proceed informally or formally, as in schooling. Formal education typically aims for some balance between individual needs and societal needs. In the United States, the differential emphasis placed on individual needs and social needs is exemplified in the historical conflict between traditional education and progressive, or open, education.
